Are you experiencing blowing light bulbs?
If you are replacing light bulbs more frequently first consider spending a little more on better quality ones. There could a loose connection in one or more place causing a surge.
Are your lights flickering?
1.If someone is upstairs and walking around does the flicker become more prevalent or non-existent. This is visual sign that there maybe a loose connection in the circuit or light fitting (s) somewhere.
2. Cable could be trapped under the floorboards or skirting boards and it looses its connection every time a specific areas is walked on.
3. Does the light not turn on when the switch is in the on position or does it feel stiff or excessively loose.
4. When operating the dimmer switch, the light switch make an abnormal buzzing sound or flicker. This could be either the dimmer switch (s) are not compatible and/or the lights bulbs (lamps) are not the dimmable type. There is also the possibility that the light fitting is of a type that cannot be dimmable.
Do you have a fishy smell in your house?
This could be an indication that the electrical installation is experiencing a chemical reaction due to overloading, loose connections, perused pendent, insulation breakdown or having circuit breakers that are incorrectly selected.
What should you do?
The only prudent action would be to switch off the main switch and call an electrician straight away. An electrician would test the installation and identify any concerns and report this in writing.
Overall the longer the wires of connected or equipment overheats this in itself could pose a fire hazard especially if they are near flammable objects such structural timber.
In some cases, I have known homeowners to misdiagnose the smell as sewage, mould, gas or dead animals.
